Litha and the Summer Solstice
More than just ancient stone circles and sunrise rituals, the Summer Solstice holds a powerful blend of ancient wisdom and modern science. In this blog, Trudi explores how this sacred seasonal turning point not only connects us with our ancestors but also recharges us on a cellular level—reminding us that our bodies and spirits are deeply in tune with the rhythms of the Earth.
The Magical Science of Summer Solstice
It’s funny.
Up until this year, the Summer Solstice for many has been a misunderstood and
romanticised celebration associated almost exclusively, at least here in the UK, with
Stonehenge.
I’ve spent many a solstice at ‘the henge’, surrounded by incredible community, ceremonies and of course the awe-inspiring sunrise. Sure, there has been the odd person who thought it was some kind of free festival or wild rave. But the eminent presence of Druid elders soon switched the tone from sunset party to sacred temple.

But what is the TRUE magic of Summer Solstice?
Aside from knowing this is the time when the sun is at its height, what does it symbolise for us today?
From the 21st June onward, the sun takes a slow decline in the sky toward shorter days and darker nights, so of course, Summer Solstice has always been a time of celebrating light, abundance and community.
As a collective, we are awakening to our ancient practices and rites of passage with rapid
enthusiasm. As a cyclical witch who has studied history for decades, I know that our Neolithic ancestors were more than primal rock-rolling communities who happened upon these incredible alignments.
They were original astrologers, mathematicians and biologists who understood the
importance of celestial movements to our lives. I find it fascinating that biologists now confirm that spending time outside around the summer solstice exposes you to the highest levels of natural zeitgeber cues (circadian rhythm factors) helping recalibrate melatonin and cortisol rhythms for months ahead.

So, when we dance, sing and feast by the fire at Summer Solstice our bodies are literally
upgrading on a cellular level! This activity is amplified by being inside energetically aligned monoliths such as stone circles as they are natural conductors of energy.
How cool is that?!
So when you are marking Summer Solstice this year – whether that’s around a fire, watching the sun with a loved one or feasting alfresco with friends - just remember that those magical rays of sun are energising your cells for months to come!
